And then came the next day and something he never expected to happen did. He slept with Sophie. When he woke up, she wasn’t in bed. He found her in the restaurant where she was eating a mountain of toast, avocados, and tomatoes.
“Good morning,” she said. “You should order breakfast before they stop serving.”
He moved to kiss her, but she leaned away and looked around. “Don’t.”
“Why not?”
“It’s unprofessional.”
“Who’s going to see us?”
“Ahmed.”
“And what difference would that make?”
She didn’t have a good answer for that. Rigg ordered breakfast, and they sat across from each other.
“We’ll focus on the birds at sunset tonight since we’re getting such a late start,” Sophie said.
“I think everyone should spend at least one day a week naked,” Rigg said.
Sophie looked up and laughed.
“You’re a little off subject, aren’t you?”
“Am I? Maybe we should go back to my room and play Garden of Eden.”
Rigg poked his fork into a slice of apple from his fruit plate and fed it to Sophie. “Stop acting like nothing happened last night,” Rigg said.
Sophie put down her toast and bit her bottom lip. “I don’t want it to get in the way of the work. We have only one more day to make something great.”
“I thought last night was pretty great,” Rigg said.
Sophie wiped her lips with a napkin. “It was just sex. We should get going or we’ll lose the whole day.” She stood up, but Rigg held her by the forearm.
“Sit down,” he said in a low voice. She sat. “It was not just sex. I like you. Your quirky independence, your silly recorder, those ridiculous glasses that you don’t really need, your devotion to the birds, and, to be honest, even that stupid safari vest is beginning to grow on me. You make me see things I didn’t want to see about myself.
“I’ve been given everything; the best education money could buy. Good friends. Even work I like. But all I could think about is how I didn’t have the success that my friends had. Somehow, that turned into arrogance—God only knows how. I’ve been abrasive and self-centered. No wonder everything blew up in my face.”
Sophie sat down, reached over, and took his hand. “You’re not that bad.” With her other hand, she picked up her fork, reached over to his plate, stabbed a slice of apple, and put it in her mouth.
